Bill Outman (46, Daytona, Florida) has never driven; he's been totally blind since age 19. On Saturday, January 29, 2011, however, he was at the Daytona International Speedway as history was made. Mark Riccobono, also blind, drove a Ford Escape, during the Blind Driver Challenge ™ demonstration prior to the Rolex 24. Outman, an aspiring writer, gave Suite 101 a first-hand account of the event.
A Perfect Day for a Blind Man at the Wheel
Saturday morning dawned clear and cool, warming to nearly ideal conditions with bright sunshine, according to Outman, who serves as secretary of the Greater Daytona Beach Chapter of the nonprofit National Federation of the Blind (NFB). Along with 400 NFB members and friends from across the country, he arrived at the Daytona International Raceway by bus from the beachside hotels around 9:30 a.m. They headed for the "NFB Grandstands" located in an infield area near turn 3.
"We were all wearing our purple Blind Driver Challenge Polo shirts and enthusiastically cheering," he recalls.
