So who delivered the most memorable commencement addresses for the Class of 2009? Here's a recap of three of the most unforgettable graduation speeches of 2009, and a list of some of the many other memorable speeches.
President Barack Obama: Notre Dame University
Barack Obama gave his first commencement address as president at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana on May 17, 2009. Because Notre Dame is a Roman Catholic institution, and because Obama is pro-choice, pro-life groups protested the speech (27 individuals were arrested for trespassing) and criticized the school's choice. However, Obama was received quite favorably overall by most in attendance, and received a standing ovation upon entering the stadium.
Your generation must seek peace at a time when there are those who will stop at nothing to do us harm, and when weapons in the hands of a few can destroy the many. And we must find a way to reconcile our ever-shrinking world with its ever-growing diversity–diversity of thought, diversity of culture, and diversity of belief. In short, we must find a way to live together as one human family
