On the one hand, big-time revenue generating sports, namely football and basketball, are more popular than ever on college campuses. On the other, criticism over the way these programs have contaminated the primary mission of higher education in the name of money and glory has continued to escalate towards a level that's hard to ignore.
Caught in the middle of this conundrum are those college and university administrators whose institutions have been the beneficiaries of the existing system. And the internal conflict generated by the dissonant pull from the two opposing set of values leaves but one option, which is… hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.
This self-serving attempt at cluelessness is an especially convenient strategy when the indiscreet behaviors of others, has the potential for personal gain. But as every sidewalk psychologist knows, da-nile (denial) is not just a river in Egypt. In fact, as reported in the Wall Street Journal and New York Times, the situation is analogous to that committed by many in Bernie Madoff’s inner circle of clients who continued to ignore the red flags hoisted by many highly respected financial pundits, just as long as their investments multiplied.
