Job sharing can be a productive way in which teachers can arrange flexible schedules for their mutual benefit. This can be particularly beneficial for working mothers and fathers, and for those continuing with further tertiary education. However, certain ground rules such as being professional and adhering to deadlines must be followed so as to avoid pitfalls of cooperative teaching.

Working Professionally Within the Classroom

When co-teaching, it is extremely important to maintain a sense of cohesion and continuity in the classroom. For example, just as children can attempt to divide and conquer separated parents, student may do the same. Communication is the key to avoiding such pitfalls. Checking homework assigned by the other teacher, following up on behaviour issues and generally being on top of things will be very beneficial.

One good way to do this is to keep a journal of each teaching day and all important issues. This can be done manually in a book, by email or blogs depending upon the teacher's individual preferences. Whichever method is chosen, notes should be as detailed as possible so that partners can work together in harmony.
